Luke 9:51 Meaning It Came to Pass

It came to pass, when the days were near that he should be taken up, he intently set his face to go to Jerusalem

What does Luke 9:51 mean?

A decision made with full knowledge of what it costs is the only kind that survives contact with the road. Once a destination stops being open to revision, the mind quits generating arguments about whether to go and starts generating arguments about how, and those are different arguments producing entirely different weeks.

A decision made with full knowledge of what it costs is the only kind that survives contact with the road.

Once a destination stops being open to revision, the mind quits generating arguments about whether to go and starts generating arguments about how, and those are different arguments producing entirely different weeks. Setting the face is a state decision, and it lands before a single logistical problem has been solved.

Jesus knew exactly what waited at the end of that road, and going anyway is what separates resolve from optimism. A commitment taken on with the price already counted does not reopen at the first refusal, which is why hostile villages became problems to route around rather than reasons to turn back. Leave the destination negotiable and every obstacle gets a vote on whether you continue.

Live Luke 9:51 today

  1. Pick the decision you have been turning over for weeks and make it today, in writing, with the cost named out loud. Not the best choice available, just a real one you stop reopening.
  2. Tell one person what you have decided and when it happens. Saying it to a face makes the quiet midnight renegotiation much harder.
  3. When the first obstacle shows up, and it will, treat it as a routing problem rather than a referendum. Ask how to get around it, never whether to keep going.

Which decision have you been making over and over because you never actually made it once?

Bhagavad Gita 2

The resolute mind holds one aim; the irresolute scatter into endless branching purposes. Arjuna is told to stand up and fight the battle in front of him, having already counted what it costs.

Stoicism · Seneca

If you do not know which harbor you are sailing for, no wind is the right wind. Most people are not blown off course, they never set one.

Tao Te Ching 64

The journey of a thousand miles begins beneath your feet. What matters is not the distance, it is that you have already started walking and are not standing there weighing it.
