Whatever a person keeps available as a way back is the thing that will eventually claim them.

Decision draws its power from cutting off; whatever goes uncut stays alive as an option, and a live option splits the mind between two futures. The split bleeds certainty from the state, and a hesitant state produces hedged action that compounds into the old life wearing new intentions.

Saying goodbye is not the trouble; the word first is, because it hands the old house the deciding vote on whether the new road gets walked. Following Jesus moves at the speed of the doors a man is willing to shut behind him. The cost is a run of near misses, each explained by a reasonable errand, with no sign from the inside that the decision was never made.

Live Luke 9:61 today

  1. Find the one back door you keep slightly open, the account you never closed, the saved number, the half-kept option, and close it today. You know exactly which one this is.
  2. Tell the person who has been waiting on your answer what it is, rather than keeping both of you suspended. The kindness is in deciding, not in staying available.
  3. When you catch yourself saying "as soon as I just finish one more thing," look at whether that thing is actually a door you are holding open. The word first is usually doing the work.

What are you keeping within reach that you have no real intention of using?
