Malachi 1:2 Meaning I Have Loved You

I have loved you,” says Yahweh. Yet you say, “How have you loved us?” “Wasn’t Esau Jacob’s brother?” says Yahweh, “Yet I loved Jacob;

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

Esau and Jacob are two men in every person, born of one nature yet not loved alike. Esau is the outer man of the senses, the elder, ruled by what the eye reports and the hand can reach. Jacob is the inner man, the supplanter, one who takes another's place. He seizes the birthright by laying hold of a state and claiming it as his own before any evidence agrees. This is why the inner man is the loved one: he lives by assumption, and assumption is the creative power.

The senses report what already stands. They make nothing new. The inner man overturns that report, quietly taking the place of the man of fact by feeling himself to be what he wants. Love here is not favoritism but recognition of the power that creates. A person is loved in the measure that he lives from within.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

What a person asks about their life every day for twenty years will build the life that answers it.

A search for missing love returns gaps, because gaps are what it was built to return. Those gaps harden into a belief about being slighted, the belief sets a grieved state, and that state turns every approach to Yahweh into a transaction run by people who already feel owed.

The choosing of one brother over another was evidence already in hand, unreachable because a question shaped to come back empty will empty whatever is set in front of it. Trade the primary question for what has already been given and the same record reads as favor; keep it running and a people stand inside the answer for generations and still feel cheated.

Live Malachi 1:2 today

  1. Sometime today, maybe on the commute or while the kettle heats, stop checking how things currently look and sit for a minute with how you want them to feel. Let that feeling be the truer report.
  2. When a friend tells you where they are stuck, talk with them for a moment as the person they are becoming rather than the person the facts describe. Say it warmly, like you already believe it.
  3. When a hard email or a bad number lands and your chest tightens, let the facts stand without arguing, then quietly decide who you are going to be about them before you reply.

Which report am I living from right now, the one my eyes gave me or the one I chose?

The same truth in other traditions

Advaita Vedanta

The senses report a world already made, and the one who believes only their report stays bound by it. Turning inward to the self that was never shaped by circumstance is the beginning of freedom.

Zen · Dogen

To study the way is to study the self, not the scenery. What you take yourself to be inwardly is the ground everything else grows from.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Facts are facts, but the ruling part of you decides what they mean and who you are inside them. That inner judgment, not the outer event, is the one thing wholly yours.
