Wanting to matter is built in; borrowing the feeling from rank is what makes it impossible to satisfy.

The fastest route any brain finds for significance is position, because position hands over a number and a number answers whether a person matters. Believing worth is positional produces a competitive state, that state reads every peer as a measurement, and measurement is how allies quietly become competitors.

Needs of the personality go deaf around information that threatens them, which is how a warning heard minutes earlier leaves no trace. Significance met through contribution needs no ledger and nobody to displace. What the ranking costs is presence, because a person tracking their placement is not doing the work in front of them.

  1. Do one useful thing today that nobody will know you did. Reply to the message that earns you nothing, clean the thing no one tracks.
  2. When someone shares good news, give them a full minute that is only about them. No version of my turn, no story of your own stapled on the end.
  3. In the meeting where you can feel yourself waiting to speak so you look sharp, ask a real question instead and let the answer be the point.

Who around you have you quietly turned into a scoreboard?
