What does Mark 12:43 mean?

A mind that gives from a guarded surplus gives nothing of itself, for heaven counts by the heart and not the coin. The part of the mind that has nothing left to protect, that keeps no reserve of fear, gives more in one unguarded gesture than all the careful contributions of those who part only with what they will not miss.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A mind that gives from a guarded surplus gives nothing of itself, for heaven counts by the heart and not the coin. The part of the mind that has nothing left to protect, that keeps no reserve of fear, gives more in one unguarded gesture than all the careful contributions of those who part only with what they will not miss.

Because she withholds nothing, she gives everything, and that total, fearless giving is the only kind love knows as real.

Widow: the part of the mind stripped of every defense, that keeps nothing in reserve and so can give without fear. Treasury: the store where the mind measures its worth by what it hoards, the place giving is weighed and found wanting.

Live Mark 12:43 today

  1. Give something away today that you would actually miss a little. An hour, a favorite book, money you had plans for. Feel the small flinch and give it anyway.
  2. When someone needs you and you are tired, give them your full attention instead of a distracted half of it. Phone away, face turned toward them, no part of you held back for later.
  3. In a week when you feel short on everything, pick one person and be generous anyway. Scarcity thinking is the reserve. Spending it is the gift.

Where am I giving just enough that it will never cost me anything?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 81

The sage does not hoard. The more they give to others, the more they have themselves, because what is held back was never really owned.

Hasidic teaching

A small coin given with a warm heart outweighs a fortune given coldly. Heaven weighs the giver, not the gift.

Buddhism · dana

True generosity leaves no residue of calculation, no mental note of what was spent or who owes what. The clean gift is the one you forget you gave.
