Mark 13:35 Meaning Watch Therefore

Watch therefore, for you don’t know when the lord of the house is coming, whether at evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning;

What does Mark 13:35 mean?

To stay awake here has nothing to do with the eyelids. It means presence, the alert stillness that is aware of this moment as it is.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

To stay awake here has nothing to do with the eyelids. It means presence, the alert stillness that is aware of this moment as it is. The master of the house is the deeper awareness in a person, not a visitor who arrives from somewhere else. He comes whenever attention returns from the noise of thinking to the quiet aliveness of now.

That homecoming can happen at any hour of an inner life. Evening brings it, when a day of striving finally quiets down. Midnight brings it, in the thick of trouble. The first grey of morning brings it, when something long asleep begins to stir. No one can schedule the moment. A person who keeps watch stays here, ready for the life that arrives without warning.

Live Mark 13:35 today

  1. At some point today, pause whatever screen you are on and sit for one minute with no input at all. Let your own aliveness be the thing you are paying attention to.
  2. When someone at home starts talking to you while you are mid task, put the phone face down and give them the first thirty seconds completely.
  3. If the night goes badly, a worry at 2am or a day that fell apart, stay with it awake instead of scrolling until you are numb. Something in you is nearest at exactly those hours.

When was the last time you were fully here, and what woke you up?

Rumi

The guest house has many visitors, and you do not get to choose who knocks or when. Open the door to each one as it arrives.

Zen · Linji

Stop looking outside for a master to come to you. The one you are waiting for has been here the whole time, behind your own eyes.

Tao Te Ching 15

The one who is awake moves like someone crossing thin ice, fully attentive, so that each step meets the ground exactly as it is.
