Mark 14:22 Meaning As They Were Eating

As they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had blessed, he broke it, and gave to them, and said, “Take, eat. This is my body.”

What does Mark 14:22 mean?

Love takes what looks like a mere thing of the world, blesses it, and gives it away, and in the giving the ordinary becomes holy. The bread broken and shared is the teaching that what the mind truly is can be extended without being diminished, that to give love is to have more of it, not less.

Love takes what looks like a mere thing of the world, blesses it, and gives it away, and in the giving the ordinary becomes holy. The bread broken and shared is the teaching that what the mind truly is can be extended without being diminished, that to give love is to have more of it, not less. The body is offered not as flesh to be consumed but as the sign that innocence holds nothing back.

To take and eat is to receive this understanding into oneself, to let the recognition of love become one's own nourishment. What is really given, and really received, is the mind's remembrance that love is meant to be shared and cannot be spent.

Bread: the gift of love the mind can share without ever losing it, the ordinary made holy by blessing Body: the sign that innocence withholds nothing, offered as a symbol of love completely given

Live Mark 14:22 today

  1. Make the ordinary thing you do alone today, the coffee, the walk, the first ten minutes, a little more deliberate. Blessing something plain costs nothing and changes the day's texture.
  2. Share something small and actual with one person, half your snack, your seat, the good parking spot, your time. You will find you have not lost anything.
  3. When you are running low and want to guard what you have left, give a little of it away on purpose, attention, patience, credit. It refills in a way that hoarding never does.

What have I been protecting, that would grow if I gave it away?

The sage gives and is not depleted, because what is given freely keeps returning. Generosity is not a withdrawal.

Buddhism · Khuddakapatha

What is laid up by giving is a store no thief can take and no loss can reach. The giver is not made poorer by it.

Judaism · Jewish table tradition

Bread blessed and shared becomes more than food. The ordinary thing changes character when it is broken open for others.
