AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Celebration is the natural response to presence. Fasting, penance, the long face of the seeker, these belong to absence, to a mind still traveling toward something it has not touched. Where the awakened is actually felt, sadness finds no ground.

The bridegroom is the awareness available the moment thought falls silent, and around it life turns into a wedding. Those who measured religiousness by how much a man denies himself were being answered: deny nothing, because presence dissolves whatever needed denying.

Live Mark 2:19 today

  1. Stand still somewhere ordinary today, the kitchen, the sidewalk, the bus stop, and let the planning stop for one minute. What is left when thought goes quiet is already pleasant, and nothing had to be given up to find it.
  2. Be openly glad with one person today and make no case for it. Send the message because you felt like it, laugh at the thing that is actually funny, stay a few minutes longer than needed.
  3. On a heavy day, when the inbox is full and the traffic is not moving, drop the project of fixing your mood. Feel your hands, feel the breath, and let the weight sit there without being solved.

What am I waiting to finish before I let myself be glad?

The same truth in other traditions

Zen

Before enlightenment, chop wood and carry water; after enlightenment, chop wood and carry water. Nothing is added or taken away, only the one doing it is awake.

Sufism · Hafiz

He sings of the long face as a kind of unbelief, and of the tavern of presence where the drink is already poured. Grief belongs to the one who thinks he is still far away.

Tao Te Ching 48

The way forward is by subtraction, not addition, until doing nothing leaves nothing undone. What was being fought drops away rather than being defeated.
