A mind possessed by its own guilt cannot be held by anything the world tries to bind it with. Every rule, every restraint, every effort from outside to master a torment that lives within is snapped like a thread, for the anguish is not in the body to be chained but in the belief the mind holds about itself.
This is why the ego's private hell seems unbreakable. The mind has made a prisoner of itself and then hands the keys to no one, and each shattered chain only proves that the cure was never going to come from restraint. What cannot be tamed from without waits for one thing, the recognition that it was never truly bound at all.
Fetters and chains: the restraints the world lays on a torment it cannot reach, every outer effort to master an inner anguish
He whom no man could tame: the mind possessed by its own guilt, held by nothing outside because its prison is a belief within
