Mark 5:41 Meaning Taking the Child by the Hand

Taking the child by the hand, he said to her, “Talitha cumi!” which means, being interpreted, “Girl, I tell you, get up!”

What does Mark 5:41 mean?

The girl lies as one dead, and the word spoken to her is arise. Within every person some stretch of aliveness has gone to sleep, dulled by years of routine and worry until it seems past waking.

Ego v. Being

The girl lies as one dead, and the word spoken to her is arise. Within every person some stretch of aliveness has gone to sleep, dulled by years of routine and worry until it seems past waking. To the world it looks finished. Really it is only sleeping.

The touch of a hand and a single word are enough, because what is called forth was never gone. Awakening does not manufacture something new. It stirs a life that was always there under the numbness, rising the moment it is called by name.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The damsel is the young, tender soul fallen into the sleep of unconsciousness, the inner life lying as though dead while it only slumbers. The taking of the hand is the higher self reaching down to the dormant lower nature, and the command to arise is the waking word spoken into the deadened part of a person until awareness stirs and stands. The girl was never truly dead; she was in the deep unknowing from which the inner voice calls the sleeping faculty back to life and lifts it to its feet.

The raising of the maiden is the quickening of a soul sunk in numbness, called upright by the awakened power within.

Damsel: the young tender soul, the inner life sunk in the sleep of unconsciousness, seeming dead while it only slumbers Hand: the reaching contact of the higher self drawing the dormant lower nature back toward waking

Live Mark 5:41 today

  1. Do one thing today that used to make you feel alive and that you quietly stopped doing. Ten minutes of it counts.
  2. Say a real word to someone who seems dimmed lately, not advice, just their name and a question that treats them as fully here.
  3. In the dead middle of a routine stretch, the commute, the dishes, the fourth meeting, lift your head and actually look at where you are for ten seconds, as if you just arrived.

What part of me has been sleeping, and what would it take to call it by name?

Zen

You were never asleep in the way you feared. The bell does not create the hearing, it simply reaches it.

Sufism · Rumi

Something in you has been drowsing for years. The voice you keep hearing in quiet moments is your own life calling you back.

Awake, arise, and learn. What you are seeking was never lost, only overlooked.
