SELF-HELP

Self-Help

A mind trained to read the unfamiliar as danger will meet its rescue and scream at it.

Meaning arrives ahead of emotion. The eyes hand over a shape, the mind files it under a category, and the category decides whether the body cries out or puts out a hand. Certainty was at full power on that water; it simply landed on a horror instead of on help, and the cry that followed was the accurate response to the category, not to Jesus.

Practice that filing long enough and rescue keeps arriving in unrecognized forms and keeps getting refused at the door. The cost shows up as delay: help that has to stop and prove what it is cannot act, and the wind keeps blowing through the whole delay.

  1. When your phone lights up with a name or a subject line that drops your stomach, pause before opening it and say out loud what you are assuming it says. Then read it and compare.
  2. If someone close to you brings up something hard, hold off on deciding what they mean until they have finished the whole thought. Most arguments are two people answering the sentence they expected.
  3. In traffic or a long line, when someone cuts in and your body flares, try one other story that also fits. You will never know which one was true, so the kinder one costs you nothing.

What have I been running from lately that might have been coming to help?

The same truth in other traditions

Stoicism · Epictetus

What shakes people is not the thing itself but the verdict they pass on it. The shout comes from the judgment, not from the shape on the water.

Advaita Vedanta

A man on a dark road jumps back from a rope he has read as a snake. The fear is completely real and the snake was never there.

Buddhism

Before pain even registers, the mind has already labeled what it is looking at. Watch that labeling happen and you are no longer at its mercy.
