Mark 7:1 Meaning Then the Pharisees and Some

Then the Pharisees and some of the scribes gathered together to him, having come from Jerusalem.

What does Mark 7:1 mean?

Standing close to Christ changes no one automatically. Trained men from the capital came within arm's reach of Him, and knowing the law best offers no protection, since expertise in holy things can harden into a position that has to be defended.

Christ receives anyone who comes asking rather than assessing, which is why the Church's shortest prayer asks for mercy instead of making a case. Repentance is open to the expert on the same terms as to everyone else, and confession is where the need to be right gets set down.

Live Mark 7:1 today

  1. Pick the thing you are most sure you are right about and spend ten honest minutes with the strongest version of the other side. Do not look for the hole in it; just let it be as strong as it is.
  2. In a conversation today, say "I don't know" or "you might be right" out loud and mean it. Being the most informed person in the room is not the same as being open.
  3. When you are the expert in the meeting or the email thread, ask a real question before you give your answer. Expertise that only defends itself has stopped being useful.

What am I defending because it is mine, not because it is true?

To know that you do not know is the beginning of wisdom. To be certain you already know is the sickness.
