Mark 7:15 · World English Bible

Mark 7:15 Meaning There Is Nothing From Outside

There is nothing from outside of the man, that going into him can defile him; but the things which proceed out of the man are those that defile the man.

What does Mark 7:15 mean?

Nothing outside the mind has the power to corrupt it, for the world holds no meaning except the one the mind first gave it. What seems to defile from without is only the mind's own guilt, thrown outward and met again as though it came from somewhere else.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Nothing outside the mind has the power to corrupt it, for the world holds no meaning except the one the mind first gave it. What seems to defile from without is only the mind's own guilt, thrown outward and met again as though it came from somewhere else. The defilement was never entering; it was leaving, projected onto a world made to carry it.

So the mirror shows the mind its own contents and calls them an enemy. What comes out is what was hidden within, and it is there, at the source, that the whole correction lies. Change the teacher inside, and there is nothing left in the world to fear, because the world was only ever reflecting what the mind chose to hold.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

You spend a great deal of energy managing the outside, arranging circumstances, avoiding the people you are sure will ruin your peace, as though contentment were something the world could hand you or steal from you. But watch closely the next time you are disturbed. Nothing out there actually reached in and touched you. What poisoned the moment was the reaction that rose up from within: the resentment, the fear, the judgment your own mind manufactured and then mistook for reality.

This is a great and freeing reversal. Your suffering is not caused by what enters you. It is caused by what your unexamined mind does with what enters. A word, an event, a delay: these are neutral until the reactive self seizes them and spins them into grievance. Once you see this, you stop waiting for the world to become gentle enough to let you be at peace. You look instead at what is arising in you, and learn to meet it with awareness rather than believe it. What comes out of you is yours to notice, and in that noticing, it loses its power to defile.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

No outer thing has the power to spoil a person's life. Food, circumstance, the behavior of others, none of it enters from outside and stains him. What shapes his world rises out of his own inner state, the mood and assumption he carries within, and that alone is what marks and colors everything he meets.

The law does not judge outward conformity. It judges the state a person holds inside, because everyone in his world is himself pushed out, called into being by the imagining he lives from. A man who feels resentment or lack wears them wherever he goes, and they return to him as events. The pure and the poisoned both begin as an inner condition assumed and felt to be so. When the state within is made clean, the outer follows it without a struggle.

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

What defiles a person comes not from the outer world but from the mind itself, and the man here is the mind, the true ground where clean and unclean are decided. Nothing from without, no outer food or circumstance, can corrupt the inner life, because purity is a matter of consciousness, not of what the body touches. The things that come out, the thoughts and states the mind produces, are what actually defile.

Those who read the Bible literally live entirely on the outside, forever fearing contamination from things around them while ignoring the real source. The fear and anger a mind generates are the only genuine defilement, and that is where the cleansing must also be done.

Man: the mind, the inner ground where the clean and the unclean are truly decided. Without: the outer world of literal appearances, where those who read only the surface live.

Live Mark 7:15 today

  1. Next time your phone delivers something that ruins your mood, pause before reacting. Ask what you brought to that message, what you were already carrying when it arrived.
  2. When someone irritates you today, try saying the generous version of their motive out loud, even silently. See whether the irritation was ever really about them.
  3. Stuck in traffic or in a slow line, when the anger starts, stop and ask what you are actually angry about. It is rarely the car in front of you.

What am I blaming the world for carrying when I handed it over myself?

Things do not touch the mind, our judgments about them do. Remove the judgment and the injury goes with it.

We are made by what we think. The world we meet each day is the one our own mind went out and built.

Knowing others is useful, knowing yourself is the real light. The one who masters himself has nothing left to conquer outside.
