Mark 7:18 Meaning He Said to Them

He said to them, “Are you also without understanding? Don’t you perceive that whatever goes into the man from outside can’t defile him,

What does Mark 7:18 mean?

The lack of understanding here is not a failure of intelligence but the mind's refusal to see where its trouble truly begins. It keeps searching outside itself for the cause of its distress, certain that something external has done the harm, when nothing external has that power.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The lack of understanding here is not a failure of intelligence but the mind's refusal to see where its trouble truly begins. It keeps searching outside itself for the cause of its distress, certain that something external has done the harm, when nothing external has that power. What enters from the world cannot corrupt a mind, because the world is an effect and not a cause.

To perceive this is the beginning of release, for a mind that stops accusing the outside is free at last to look within, where correction is possible. The cause was never out there. Understanding dawns the moment the mind turns from the mirror to the one who is choosing what it shows.

Live Mark 7:18 today

  1. When you feel bad today, skip the usual hunt for the cause out there. Ask what you were telling yourself just before the feeling arrived.
  2. Before you complain to someone about a third person, pause and ask whether you want to understand your own reaction or just confirm it. Try the first one for a change.
  3. In a heated exchange, stop yourself from the sentence that starts with you always. Ask instead what in you got touched, and say that.

Where have I been searching outside for a problem that was never out there?

Stoicism · Epictetus

People are disturbed not by events but by their opinions about events. Look for the trouble where it lives, in your own view.

Buddhism · the second arrow

The first arrow is what happened. The second is the story we tell about it, and that is the one that keeps hurting.

Tao Te Ching 47

You do not have to travel to understand. Sit still, look inward, and what you were chasing outside becomes clear.
