Mark 7:23 Meaning All These Evil Things Come From Within
All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Mark 7:23 · World English Bible
All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.
The summary closes the circle: whatever seemed to threaten from the world was issued from the mind that feared it. This is not a verdict of doom but the first good news, for a cause held within is a cause that can be changed, while an evil lodged in the world outside would leave a person helpless before it.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY
The summary closes the circle: whatever seemed to threaten from the world was issued from the mind that feared it. This is not a verdict of doom but the first good news, for a cause held within is a cause that can be changed, while an evil lodged in the world outside would leave a person helpless before it.
So the point of tracing every darkness back to its source is release. A mind that owns where its trouble began also owns the power to choose again, and choosing love where it once chose fear, it finds the defilement was never in things at all, only in the way it had learned to look.

EGO & BEING
We are quick to locate the source of our suffering outside ourselves, in circumstances, in other people, in the conditions we did not choose. But the mind is where reaction is born. Resentment, cruelty, deceit, these do not arrive from the world; they arise from the unconscious identification with thought, from the wounded self that feels threatened and strikes out.
This is not cause for shame. It is the beginning of freedom. Once you see that what harms you and others rises from within, you stop endlessly rearranging the outer world, and you turn attention to the only place transformation can happen. What you bring into awareness there loses its power to run you.

SUFISM
When the heart is sound, the whole body is sound: everything follows the center A saying of the Prophet puts a person's whole condition on one inner point. Someone can keep every rule on the outside and still carry a spoiled center, and that center works its way out into how they speak to people. Behavior is only the readout; the heart is where a person stands.
Khawāṭir: Passing thoughts that arrive on their own Sufis pay close attention to the small thoughts that show up before any choice is made. A person learns to see where each one comes from: hurt pride, old resentment, fear, appetite. Ugly acts begin as tiny arrivals long before they become plans, and they are far easier to drop at that stage than later.
Al-nafs al-ammāra bi'l-sūʾ: The self that keeps pushing toward harm The Quran names a part of a person that steadily urges them toward what damages them. Its pull feels like their own preference, which is why it almost never announces itself as temptation. Blaming circumstances for what someone did stops working once they can feel that push as their own.
Ṣadaʾ al-qalb: Rust on the heart Al-Ghazali compares the heart to a mirror that dulls over with use. Each grudge, small lie, or greedy turn leaves a film on it, and after enough of them a person stops seeing themselves clearly and stops feeling the difference between right and wrong as sharply. The damage lands first on the one who does it, well before it reaches anybody else.
Muḥāsaba: Taking account of oneself Sufis close the day by going back over it honestly. The question is less which rules were kept and more what was moving underneath: envy, wanting to look good, wanting to win. Listing your actions is easy; naming what drove each one takes nerve, and that honesty is where a person starts to change.
Christian Psychology lens
Where am I waiting for the world to change so I can feel better?
Mind leads everything. The world you suffer is built from thoughts, so the place to begin repairs is inside.
Some things are in your power and some are not. Freedom begins the moment you stop trying to fix the weather and start with your own response.
The rope was never a snake. The fear was real, but it came from the seeing, and seeing clearly is the whole of the cure.
