Mark 8:15 Meaning He Warned Them

He warned them, saying, “Take heed: beware of the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod.”

What does Mark 8:15 mean?

A warning is given here about how thought spreads. A single hidden assumption, once accepted, works quietly through the whole of the mind the way a little yeast works through the dough, and changes everything it touches without ever being seen.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A warning is given here about how thought spreads. A single hidden assumption, once accepted, works quietly through the whole of the mind the way a little yeast works through the dough, and changes everything it touches without ever being seen. The mind is being told to guard the small beliefs it takes in, because none of them stay small.

Two kinds of hidden belief are named. One is the conviction that righteousness is a matter of judging others, and the other is the conviction that safety comes from ruling and defending by force. Both begin as a private thought and end as the atmosphere a whole life breathes. The mind that watches what it lets in has already begun to choose which teacher will fill it.

Leaven: the small accepted belief that works unseen through the whole mind until it colors everything, so that no thought taken in stays private Pharisees: the part of the mind that makes righteousness a matter of judging others, the habit of measuring and condemning Herod: the part of the mind that trusts in ruling and force for safety, the fear that defends itself by power

Live Mark 8:15 today

  1. Look at what you took in today, the feeds, the videos, the voices, and ask what mood they left behind. Then cut one that reliably sours you.
  2. In a conversation where everyone is sizing someone up, decline to add your line. One person not joining is enough to change the temperature.
  3. When you feel the urge to get control by force, by a sharp email or a final word, wait an hour. Safety bought that way never actually arrives.

Which small belief have I let in that is quietly coloring everything else?

Watch what you let the mind rehearse. A thought repeated becomes a habit, and habits quietly become the whole shape of a life.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Guard who and what you spend your hours with, because you come to resemble it. Small exposures do most of the forming.

The great grows from the small. Deal with things while they are still tiny, since nothing stays tiny for long.
