Mark 8:20 Meaning When the Seven Loaves Fed the Four

“When the seven loaves fed the four thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces did you take up?” They told him, “Seven.”

What does Mark 8:20 mean?

The number 7 is the number of spiritual completeness, the 7 centers of force ranged up the body from base to crown, and it governs this whole accounting. From the feeding of the many, the vast field of a person's thoughts, 7 baskets of fragments are gathered up, the surplus of spiritual power that remains once the inner multitude has been nourished.

What is left over is not waste but the full sevenfold measure, collected and kept. The higher life, when it feeds the crowd within, does not run dry but returns a complete set of vessels filled.

7: the number 7 as spiritual fullness, the 7 centers of force rising through the body to the crown. 4 thousand: the great multitude of thoughts within a person, the inner crowd that is fed. Baskets of fragments: the vessels that gather the surplus spiritual energy left after the inner crowd is nourished.

Live Mark 8:20 today

  1. Give your real attention to one thing today, a task, a book, a prayer, instead of splitting it eight ways. You will finish with more energy than you started, which never happens with scattered days.
  2. Offer someone something small you have plenty of, time, a skill, a ride, a recommendation. See whether you feel emptier afterward or fuller.
  3. On a day that demands everything, stop for five minutes before you are empty rather than after. Gathering the leftovers is part of the work, not a reward for finishing it.

Where have you been living as if your supply were running out?

Tao Te Ching 4

The way is like a vessel that is drawn from and never empties. Real source is not depleted by giving.

Hinduism · Upanishads

Take fullness from fullness and fullness still remains. What is whole does not shrink when it is poured out.

Stoicism · Seneca

In his book on benefits Seneca said a gift rightly given enriches both sides. The giver is not made poorer by what passes through their hands.
