EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Now the question turns and becomes personal. Not what others say, but what do you say, out of your own direct knowing? Peter does not consult his memory or weigh the arguments. Something in him recognizes what stands before him, and the answer rises from a depth beneath all thought. Thou art the Christ.

What he names is not a role or a title but a state of awakened presence, the deep aliveness that is our true nature. Peter could see that presence in front of him because the very same presence was alive in him. You only recognize in another what already lives in you, and that is why his answer did not come from thinking. It came from the awareness in him recognizing itself in the man before him.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

The question that changes a man is the one he cannot answer with something he heard from somebody else.

Public opinion is cheap to collect and cheaper to hold, and a mind asked to report it will do so all day without one belief of its own moving. Aim the question at the person instead and the search has nowhere to go but their own evidence, and the answer that comes back has to be owned.

Peter did not learn anything new there; a question went and got what was already in him. Confessing the Christ out loud turns a private impression into an identity, and identity decides what a man does at three in the morning when the belief turns expensive. Left unasked, something true can sit in a person for years without ever determining one decision.

Live Mark 8:29 today

  1. Think of the last time something moved you deeply, a piece of music, a face, a line in a book. Sit with the fact that the depth you felt was coming from inside you.
  2. When you are with someone you love, look at them for a moment without the usual commentary about them. There is something awake behind their eyes that is awake behind yours too.
  3. In an argument, when you are gathering your evidence and reasons, pause and let a simpler, quieter answer come instead. You will know it because it does not need to win.

What do I know to be true from my own depths, not because someone told me?

You cannot borrow another person's eyes. What is understood from a book is secondhand; what you see for yourself is yours.
