Mark 8:31 · World English Bible

Mark 8:31 Meaning He Began to Teach Them

He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

What does Mark 8:31 mean?

When truth appears within a mind still ruled by fear, everything that governs by guilt turns against it, for the established order of the ego cannot let its own undoing pass unchallenged. The rejection and the seeming death are not the defeat of love but the measure of how completely the old system will resist it.

When truth appears within a mind still ruled by fear, everything that governs by guilt turns against it, for the established order of the ego cannot let its own undoing pass unchallenged. The rejection and the seeming death are not the defeat of love but the measure of how completely the old system will resist it. What condemns the innocent is only the mind's own judgment, hardened into the figures that pronounce the sentence.

Yet the rising is promised in the same breath. What fear appears to kill it cannot touch, because the Self it attacks was never a body to begin with. After the darkness has done its worst the truth stands up unharmed, showing that the whole ordeal was a dream from which the mind was always going to wake.

Son of man: the awakened Self appearing within a mind still ruled by fear, the innocence that the old order cannot tolerate Elders, chief priests, and scribes: the established structures of judgment within the mind, the ego's authority hardened into the voices that condemn what would set the mind free

  1. When something inside you says a hard truth about yourself and your first move is to argue it down, let it stand for a minute without defending. The resistance is loudest right where something real is arriving.
  2. If someone close to you is changing in a way that unsettles you, resist the urge to pull them back to who they were. Ask them what it feels like from inside instead.
  3. Under criticism at work, before you build your case, let the part of you that is not on trial stay quiet and unbothered. Answer from there, not from the panic.

What in me fights hardest against the thing that would actually set me free?

The same truth in other traditions

Taoism · Chuang Tzu

Chuang Tzu dreamed he was a butterfly and woke unsure which was the dream. What the dream does to you, waking undoes entirely, so its harm was never as real as it felt.

Hinduism · Bhagavad Gita 2

Krishna tells Arjuna that what is truly real was never born and cannot be slain, and that weapons and fire reach only the outer covering, never the one wearing it.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Epictetus said that others can touch your body, your reputation and your circumstances, but no one can touch the part of you that chooses. That part is out of their reach even when they are certain they have won.
