Mark 8:6 · World English Bible

Mark 8:6 Meaning He Commanded the Multitude to Sit Down

He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground, and he took the seven loaves. Having given thanks, he broke them, and gave them to his disciples to serve, and they served the multitude.

What does Mark 8:6 mean?

What little a mind is willing to bring is enough, once it is placed in love's hands with thanks instead of anxiety. The few loaves are the small store a person believes is all he has, and the giving of thanks is the turn from counting scarcity to trusting supply, for gratitude looks at what is present rather than at what is feared missing.

Then the gift passes through many hands and reaches all, because love increases only by being given away. A mind that grasps its little keeps it little; a mind that offers what it has watches it multiply as it moves, and finds that having and giving were never opposed.

Loaves: the small supply a mind believes is all it holds, enough once it is offered to love rather than hoarded in fear. Disciples: the willing thoughts through which love extends itself, the channels that carry the gift from its source to every part of the mind.

Live Mark 8:6 today

  1. Before the day gets loud, name three things you already have instead of opening with the list of what is missing. It takes a minute and it changes the tone of the morning.
  2. Offer the small thing you think is too small to matter today: the half hour, the introduction, the honest answer. Give it before you have decided it is enough.
  3. When a project feels short on time, money, or help, start with what is actually on the table rather than stalling for more. Beginning with little usually reveals more than waiting did.

What small thing have I been holding back because it seemed too little to give?

Tao Te Ching

The sage keeps nothing back and therefore lacks nothing. What is held tight stays small, what is given away keeps moving.

Buddhism · Dana teaching

Generosity is the first practice, and the giver gains most. Something in the hand opens as it releases.

Stoicism · Seneca

Gratitude for what is already here ends the hunger for what is not. Count what you hold and it quietly becomes enough.
