Mark 9:2 Meaning After Six Days Jesus Took with Him

After six days Jesus took with him Peter, James, and John, and brought them up onto a high mountain privately by themselves, and he was changed into another form in front of them.

What does Mark 9:2 mean?

When a mind is drawn up and set apart from its usual noise, what it always was becomes visible. The change that comes over the figure before them is not a new thing added but a veil removed, the covering of appearance lifted so that the light beneath shows through.

Christian Psychology

When a mind is drawn up and set apart from its usual noise, what it always was becomes visible. The change that comes over the figure before them is not a new thing added but a veil removed, the covering of appearance lifted so that the light beneath shows through. Nothing was created in that moment; something was finally seen, because the mind had climbed to where it could look without fear.

The height and the apartness are the inner condition for this seeing. Away from the constant traffic of judgment and defense, the mind grows still enough to perceive the truth that the ordinary day keeps hidden. What is shown on the mountain is what is always true, waiting only for a quiet high place in the mind where it can at last be recognized.

High mountain: the raised and quieted state of mind, set apart from ordinary fear, where truth can be perceived without the covering of appearance Peter, James, and John: the parts of the mind ready to be drawn up and shown, the faculties willing to leave the usual noise and look

The 6 days are the 6 energy centers, the sixth reached before the light breaks open, the lower labor of the body completed step by step until the ascent can begin. Peter, James, and John are the 3 levels a person carries up together: the physical, the mind, and the spirit, with Peter the small stone, the pineal, the seed of vision at the center of the head. Led apart, away from the crowd of ordinary thought, they climb.

The high mountain is the raised state of consciousness at the crown, and there the form changes: the hidden radiance that was always inside the body shines out through it. Transfiguration is the light that lived within a person breaking through the surface once the climb reaches the top of the head.

Live Mark 9:2 today

  1. Take ten quiet minutes today with no screen, no music, no plan. The point is not to achieve anything, only to let the water settle and see what is actually in it.
  2. Spend time with one person with the phones away and no agenda. You will see something in them that the usual noise keeps covered.
  3. Before a hard conversation or a big decision, step outside for two minutes first. Decide from the quieter mind, not the stirred one.

What might I see about my own life if I stopped stirring it for one afternoon?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 15

Muddy water clears when it is left alone. Nothing is added to make it clean, the stirring simply stops.

The Yoga Sutras say that when the churning of the mind settles, what you are shows itself. Clarity is not produced, it is uncovered.

Sufism · Rumi

Rumi tells of artists who painted nothing and only polished their wall until it shone. What they finally showed was the light that had been in the room all along.
