A foot is what carries you forward, and some directions the mind insists on taking lead only deeper into pain. To cut off the offending foot is to stop walking a path your conditioning swears you must keep walking, to end a momentum that has become its own justification. The ego will call this a loss. It is a rescue.
The unquenchable fire is nothing imposed from outside. It is the self-perpetuating anguish of a mind that keeps moving in the wrong direction because stopping feels like death. To enter life limping is to be present and free, having surrendered the compulsion. You reach peace not by pressing on but by being willing to halt.
