Mark 9:7 · World English Bible

Mark 9:7 Meaning A Cloud Came

A cloud came, overshadowing them, and a voice came out of the cloud, “This is my beloved Son. Listen to him.”

What does Mark 9:7 mean?

What overshadows the mind here is not darkness but a presence too full to be looked at directly, the nearness of a love that surrounds before it speaks. Out of that enveloping comes the one thing the fearful self has never believed about itself, that it is beloved and always has been.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

What overshadows the mind here is not darkness but a presence too full to be looked at directly, the nearness of a love that surrounds before it speaks. Out of that enveloping comes the one thing the fearful self has never believed about itself, that it is beloved and always has been. The message is not earned by the ascent; it is simply revealed to a mind that has grown quiet enough to receive it.

And the single instruction is to listen. Not to strive, not to defend, only to hear the voice that names the Self as cherished and asks the mind to attend to it rather than to fear. Everything turns on that willingness to listen, because the truth of what one is has been speaking all along, waiting only to be heard.

Cloud: the surrounding presence of love, too full to be looked at directly, that envelops the mind before it speaks Beloved Son: the true Self as love knows it, cherished and innocent, which the fearful mind is asked to hear and accept as its own

Live Mark 9:7 today

  1. When a compliment comes in today, a text, a word from a colleague, let it land instead of deflecting it with a joke. Just say thank you and let it be true for a moment.
  2. Tell someone plainly what you value about them, no qualifier, no teasing. Then stay in the slight awkwardness long enough for them to hear it.
  3. When the harsh inner voice starts up after a mistake, stop arguing with it and listen for the kinder one instead. It has been speaking the whole time, just more quietly.

Whose voice do I let describe me, and why do I trust the cruel one more?

In Rumi's telling, a man who feared his years of calling had gone unanswered is told that the longing itself was the answer, that his cry was the reply already arriving.

Hinduism · Chandogya Upanishad

The teaching given to the son is three words, you are that. Nothing is added to him, he is only told what he already is and asked to let it be true.

The loving kindness practice begins with yourself, because a heart that cannot receive its own kindness has nothing real to offer anyone else.
