Matthew 1:5 Meaning Salmon Became the Father of Boaz

Salmon became the father of Boaz by Rahab. Boaz became the father of Obed by Ruth. Obed became the father of Jesse.

What does Matthew 1:5 mean?

Rahab and Ruth stand in the family line that runs through Jesse toward the whole, true self, and their presence says something plain: wholeness cannot be born from pure blood alone. The rejected, the foreign, the outsider must be woven into the chain as well.

Psychoanalysis

Rahab and Ruth stand in the family line that runs through Jesse toward the whole, true self, and their presence says something plain: wholeness cannot be born from pure blood alone. The rejected, the foreign, the outsider must be woven into the chain as well.

Read this way, the family line is a pattern unfolding in time, each generation a step where opposites are not erased but joined. Rahab, once a prostitute, and Ruth, a foreigner from Moab, are not mistakes to explain away. They are the hidden other side brought into the fathers' line, the marriage of opposites out of which a whole person can finally be born.

Live Matthew 1:5 today

  1. Think of one part of your past you leave out when you tell people about yourself. Sit with it for a minute without arguing with it or explaining it away.
  2. In your group chat or at dinner, really listen to the person whose view you usually skip over. Ask them one follow-up question instead of moving on.
  3. When someone brings up the thing about you that you wish they would not, in a meeting or at a family table, try saying yes, that happened, instead of changing the subject. The air in the room usually gets easier, not worse.

What part of your own story are you still trying to keep out of the family picture?
