Holiness does not pass down like eye color. A faithful king fathers a faithful son, who fathers a disastrous one, and the line keeps running anyway. Every generation decides for itself, which is why no family can coast on the devotion of the one before it.

God still chose to come through that line rather than around it. The Word took flesh inside an ordinary human ancestry with saints and scoundrels tangled together, and did not wait for a clean one. That is why family life counts as holy ground even when a particular family is a wreck. Grace has always traveled through the people actually available.

Live Matthew 1:8 today

  1. Think of one habit you picked up from the house you grew up in, good or bad, and decide today whether you are keeping it because you chose it or because nobody ever stopped it.
  2. Say one honest good thing to a relative you find difficult, not a reconciliation speech, just a sentence that costs you a little.
  3. When a family story comes up that makes you wince, let it stay in the room instead of changing the subject. You can come from a mess and still be going somewhere.

If your family line is neither a credit nor an excuse, what is actually yours to decide this week?

The same truth in other traditions

Confucius · Analects

Virtue is not inherited with the family name. Each person has to take up the work themselves, which is why a great father can have a careless son and a poor family can produce someone remarkable.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

You are not made by your birth but by your actions. What you repeatedly do becomes what you are, no matter the house you came from.

Judaism · Pirkei Avot

The crown of a good name is not passed along like the crowns of priesthood or kingship. It is lying there for anyone willing to pick it up.
