Matthew 10:1 Meaning He Called to Himself His Twelve Disciples

He called to himself his twelve disciples, and gave them authority over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal every disease and every sickness.

What does Matthew 10:1 mean?

The power to heal is not conferred as a strange new ability but awakened as something the mind always held once it stands with love. What is called unclean is simply the thought of fear, and to cast it out is to withdraw belief from it, for a fearful thought has no strength except the strength a mind lends it.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The power to heal is not conferred as a strange new ability but awakened as something the mind always held once it stands with love. What is called unclean is simply the thought of fear, and to cast it out is to withdraw belief from it, for a fearful thought has no strength except the strength a mind lends it. Every sickness answers to this, because every sickness begins in a mind that has agreed to suffer.

So the healing given here is really an authority remembered. The mind that has chosen love discovers it can refuse fear its welcome, and in that refusal the whole array of ills that fear invents finds nothing left to stand on.

Disciples: the faculties of a mind aligned with love, awakened to their power to refuse fear Unclean spirits: the thoughts of fear that hold no power but the belief a mind lends them, undone when that belief is withdrawn

ESOTERIC

Esoteric

The 12 called and empowered are the 12 faculties of a complete person, and the number 12 is the full circle of the developed self, the whole zodiac of powers arranged around a center and awakened together. To be given authority over unclean spirits is for each faculty to receive command over the disordered energies and impure states that trouble the inner life, so the powers that were passive become active governors. Casting out and healing are the ordering of the body-temple from within, the restoration of every function to its clean working.

The center of this is a self coming into its own rule. When the governing consciousness gathers its 12 powers and endows them, sickness and disorder inside a person yield, because the disciplined faculties now hold sway over the very disturbances that once ruled them.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

Wholeness gathers its own messengers. The deep center that wants a person whole calls twelve together, a number that signals completeness, and arms them against the unclean spirits, the buried, self-driven knots that seize a person from below. The old words ruach and pneuma both mean breath, the living soul handed over to a power greater than the everyday self.

When that breath turns 'unclean,' it marks split-off parts of the mind, alive on their own, as strange as the urge that grips a person mid-morning for no reason. Power over such spirits is the real task: not wiping them out but facing them, pulling back what has been blamed on others until what once drove a person from the dark is finally known.

Live Matthew 10:1 today

  1. When a worry starts looping, say out loud what it is actually predicting. Then decide, plainly, that you are not going to lend it the next twenty minutes.
  2. Sit with someone who is spiraling and do not join them in it. Stay calm in your own body while you listen, and let your steadiness be the thing you offer.
  3. In a meeting or a hard conversation, when you feel the urge to defend yourself, pause one breath before answering. Speak from the settled version of you, not the alarmed one.

Which fear have I been feeding, as though it would collapse without me?

The same truth in other traditions

Dhammapada

Fear and anger live on the thoughts you keep rehearsing. Stop feeding them and they starve, because they had no strength of their own to begin with.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Some things are in our power and some are not. The moment you stop handing your peace to what you cannot control, most of what frightened you loses its grip.

Upanishads

What you are looking for is already the one doing the looking. Nothing new is added; the power was simply unrecognized.
