Brother will deliver up brother to death, and the father his child. Children will rise up against parents, and cause them to be put to death.
Betrayal inside the blood bond is the drive toward wholeness in its most violent and intimate form. The father who hands over his child and the child who turns on the parent are each living out the collapse of a borrowed image: the father starts as an all-covering picture of God living in the child's mind, and when that picture has to shrink to human size, it tears instead of ripening, and the rejected feelings fall onto the nearest familiar face.

A shared meal cools into testimony before a judge. Real suffering comes first, and the grief of those handed over to death must be named before any reading of the betrayer's inner state. Yet beneath that grief, something whole presses against every bond that has put a human face in place of the divine image it cannot stop carrying.

Which person in your family are you still asking to be larger than human?
Arjuna stands on the battlefield and sees cousins, uncles and teachers in the ranks facing him. The hardest war is never with strangers, it is with the faces that raised you, and he cannot step forward until the picture he carried of them breaks.
The harm an enemy can do is small next to the harm a wrongly turned mind does to its owner. The wound is real, and the grip on the old demand keeps it bleeding.
If you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him. What has to die is not the person but the towering figure you made of them, and while it stands it turns on you from the nearest familiar face.
