Matthew 10:30 Meaning But the Very Hairs of Your Head

but the very hairs of your head are all numbered.

What does Matthew 10:30 mean?

Feel, for a moment, how the anxious mind assumes it is on its own, unwatched, responsible for holding the whole of its life together by effort and worry. From that assumption comes the endless vigilance, the sense that if you relax your grip everything will fall.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Feel, for a moment, how the anxious mind assumes it is on its own, unwatched, responsible for holding the whole of its life together by effort and worry. From that assumption comes the endless vigilance, the sense that if you relax your grip everything will fall. But underneath that story there is an intelligence far more intimate with your life than your own thinking, attentive to what is smallest and most easily overlooked in you.

That the very hairs of your head are numbered is a way of pointing to a nearness you keep forgetting: nothing of you falls outside a caring awareness, nothing is too small to be held. When you sense this, the frantic self-management can rest. You are not the lonely manager of your existence that the mind imagines; you are already carried, already known, down to the least detail. Presence lets you feel it. In the stillness of this moment you touch that intimacy directly, and the compulsion to control loosens into a quiet, unguarded trust.

PSYCHOANALYSIS

Psychoanalysis

Every hair counted is a sign that no part of a person, however small or far from the center, falls outside the pull toward wholeness.

In old alchemy, each strand of hair was seen as a thread rooting a human being in its divine source, a living channel joining the creature to the ground it came from. Counting the hairs is a picture of a person growing whole: what the everyday mind throws away as waste, the trimmed hair that vanishes onto a barbershop floor without a second thought, is held in exact account by the image of God.

Nothing in the inner life is an accident. What a person has not yet made their own is already held within a knowing that takes in the whole.

Live Matthew 10:30 today

  1. Sometime today, when you catch yourself running the mental list of everything you have to keep from falling apart, put the phone face down and sit still for one minute without fixing anything. Let yourself feel that life kept going anyway.
  2. With someone close to you, let one small thing go unmanaged. Do not remind them, do not follow up, do not check. Trust that it is held by something besides your vigilance.
  3. When the pressure hits, a deadline, traffic that will not move, a message you dread opening, feel your feet on the floor before you react. You are not alone in this moment, and your grip is not what is keeping you upright.

What would today feel like if you believed something kinder than your own worry was already paying attention?

Tao Te Ching 51

The Tao gives rise to all things and sustains them without effort or announcement, nourishing each one down to its smallest part. You are being carried by something that never needed your supervision.

Sufism · Rumi

Rumi writes that the one who shaped you knows your condition better than you know it yourself, and that your worry adds nothing to that knowing. The grief of self-management dissolves when you sense how closely you are already held.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Epictetus taught that the universe is governed well, and that straining to control what was never yours to control is the one true source of anxiety. Loosen the grip and you find you were never holding things up.
