Matthew 12:33 Meaning Either Make the Tree Good

Either make the tree good, and its fruit good, or make the tree corrupt, and its fruit corrupt; for the tree is known by its fruit.

What does Matthew 12:33 mean?

The tree is the spine, the trunk of the body up which the life force climbs, and its fruit is the quality of consciousness that ripens at the top. Good is God with an o inserted, so a sound spine bears divine awareness and a blocked one bears its opposite; the state of the inner column decides what grows at the crown.

No fruit of true knowing hangs on a corrupted trunk, and the character of a person is read straight off what the spine has produced.

What happens inside is that the condition of the inner tree shows itself in the fruit of the mind, and the awareness at the top is simply what the whole column has grown.

Tree: the spine, the trunk of the body up which the life force rises Fruit: the quality of consciousness that ripens at the crown Good: the word God with an o inserted, the divine within

Citta: The heart Fruit carries the flavor of the tree it grew on, and speech carries the flavor of the heart it grew in. A soured heart cannot hand you sweet words for long; sooner or later the mouth pours out what the inside is steeped in. Sweeten the source and the words come sweet on their own, the way ripe fruit needs no added sugar.

Mūla: Roots A tree is only as sound as what feeds it underground. Greed, hatred, and confusion are the roots that push up bruised, worm-eaten fruit; their opposites, letting go, kindness, and clear seeing, feed fruit that keeps. To make the tree good you tend the roots, not the branches, since nothing you hang on a rotten trunk will hold.

Cetanā: Intention Inside every piece of fruit sits the seed that shaped it. Before a word leaves your mouth, a small choice sets its direction, and that choice is the seed of good or corrupt fruit. Plant the intention clean and the deed grows the same way, straight from the pit outward.

Kamma: Action and its fruit An apple seed will not give you figs, no matter how hard you wish. A deed ripens into a result of its own kind, kindness into ease, cruelty into a harvest you would not choose, and the ripening cannot be argued with. This is how the tree is known by its fruit: in time each life hands over exactly what it has been growing.

Vācā: Speech Words are the fruit you can hear. A basket set out at the market shows everyone what the orchard is like, and in the same way each thing you say puts your heart on open display. Even the idle remark counts, since it dropped from the same branch as the rest.

SELF-HELP

Self-Help

Managing your behavior one act at a time is the hardest way to change and the least likely to last.

Anyone can force one good piece of fruit onto a bad tree for a season, and it will cost everything they have. Set the kind of tree and the output reorganizes on its own, because the kind of tree a person has decided to be sets what they treat as normal, normal sets what feels effortless, and effortless is what gets repeated until it hardens into a destiny.

Jesus is telling His accusers to stop auditing individual works and settle the question of what He is, because conduct only ever reports identity. The test runs both directions: fruit tells the truth about the tree, and the tree, once set, decides the fruit. Anyone policing outputs while leaving their self-definition alone spends their whole life in maintenance and changes nothing.

Live Matthew 12:33 today

  1. Today, pay attention to what you let into you in the first twenty minutes after waking. What you feed the root in the morning is standing in your face by afternoon.
  2. Instead of telling someone what you believe, just do one small decent thing for them today and say nothing about it. Let the fruit do the talking.
  3. When you snap at someone, in traffic, on a call, at dinner, do not only apologize for the snap. Look at what was growing in you all morning that made it ready to come out.

If someone judged you only by what you actually produced this week, what would they say you are rooted in?

What you are today came out of your thoughts yesterday. The mind makes the person the way a root makes the tree.

Tao Te Ching 64

The tall tree grew from a sprout nobody watched. What stands at the end was decided in what was tended at the start.
