Matthew 12:40 Meaning For as Jonah Was Three Days
For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

Matthew 12:40 · World English Bible
For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the whale, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
There is a descent that every awakening requires, a going down into the dark before the rising. Jonah in the belly of the whale, the swallowed one held in the deep, is the picture of what happens when the life you clung to ends and you fall into what feels like nothing.

EGO & BEING
There is a descent that every awakening requires, a going down into the dark before the rising. Jonah in the belly of the whale, the swallowed one held in the deep, is the picture of what happens when the life you clung to ends and you fall into what feels like nothing.
This darkness is not punishment. It is the space where the false self dissolves so something truer can emerge. When your outer identity collapses and you find yourself in the heart of the earth, in that heavy inner silence, do not fight it. The descent is not the end of you. It is the very passage through which a deeper aliveness returns, exactly as one climbs from a pit into light.

ESOTERIC
The descent is inward, into the dark center of the body where the spirit is swallowed by matter before it can rise. The whale's belly and the heart of the earth are the same place: the dense flesh, the buried depths of a person, where the higher self lies hidden in the lowest ground.
The number 3 weighs the passage. It is the number of completion through darkness, the full measure of time the spirit must lie entombed in the body before waking. The Son of man is the divine spark in every person, sunk into the animal depths, waiting out its season in the dark until it rises through the column again.
Whale's belly: the dark hollow of the flesh, the dense body that swallows the spirit and holds it in the deep Heart of the earth: the buried center of a person, the lowest ground of the body where the spark lies entombed The number 3: the full measure of the spirit's night in matter, the darkness completed before the rising

PSYCHOANALYSIS
There is an old pattern in the soul in which a person must go down into the dark before he can rise. He is swallowed, held in a place with no light, cut off from the ordinary world. It can feel like being lost, or even like dying.
Yet the darkness is not only ruin. It works like a long night in which something is quietly remade, below the reach of the will. The one who is taken down into the depths and stays there through the worst of it comes back up carrying what daylight could never give him. He returns changed because the darkness did work in him that no effort in the light could have done.
Ego v. Being lens
What is still trying to end in me, and could I stop fighting it today?
The way goes down before it goes up, and water finds the lowest place and gathers strength there. What looks like losing is often the turning.
The lotus grows out of the mud, not out of clean water. The dark and the heaviness are the ground the flower needs.
Joseph was thrown into the well and came out a ruler of Egypt. Do not curse the pit you are in, because you cannot yet see what it is carrying you toward.
