Matthew 12:6 Meaning But I Tell You That One Greater

But I tell you that one greater than the temple is here.

What does Matthew 12:6 mean?

The mind has always sought holiness in a structure, a place set apart where God might be kept and approached on fixed terms, because a thing outside can be controlled and defended. Yet what is greater than any temple is the living awareness that recognizes love, for holiness was never in the walls but in the mind that looks with the eyes of forgiveness.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The mind has always sought holiness in a structure, a place set apart where God might be kept and approached on fixed terms, because a thing outside can be controlled and defended. Yet what is greater than any temple is the living awareness that recognizes love, for holiness was never in the walls but in the mind that looks with the eyes of forgiveness.

When presence itself stands before the mind, the shrine becomes small, not because it is scorned but because the reality it only pointed toward has arrived. A mind that grasps this stops worshiping the form and turns to the meaning, which needs no building to house it and cannot be lost.

Temple: the external form the mind builds to hold holiness at a safe distance, mistaking the container for the presence it was meant to serve.

AWARENESS

Indian Guru

Stone can be arranged into a holy shape, but holiness itself only ever happens in a living being. What is present here, awake, breathing, hungry, is more sacred than the building raised to honor it, and the men counting infractions of the sabbath had spent their lives serving the smaller thing.

Every temple was raised as a pointer, and pointers become idols the moment they are worshipped. Whoever tastes his own awareness can walk into any shrine without needing it; whoever has not will defend the walls furiously, because the walls are all he has.

Live Matthew 12:6 today

  1. Somewhere you would not call sacred, a parking garage, the bathroom at work, the kitchen at 6am, stop for ten seconds and let it be enough. Nothing has to be arranged for you to be present.
  2. When someone is talking to you today, put the phone face down and look at them like they are the point, not the interruption between tasks. Whatever holiness you have been looking for is closer to that than to any room you could go sit in.
  3. In the hard moment, the tense meeting, the group chat going sideways, the long line when you are already late, drop the posture you were about to take and choose the kinder read of the person in front of you. That choice is the greater thing, and you can make it anywhere.

Where have I been waiting to arrive somewhere before I let myself be present?

Tao Te Ching 11

A clay pot is useful because of the emptiness inside it, and a room because of the space the walls hold. The form matters only for what it makes room for, never in itself.

A finger pointing at the moon is worth following until you look up. Then the finger is just a finger, and anyone still studying it has missed what it was for.

The Kaaba is stone and the heart is alive, so pilgrims circle the house while the house itself bows toward the one who truly loves. The shrine was always borrowing its worth from the awake heart.
