Matthew 12:8 Meaning For the Son of Man Is Lord

For the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.

What does Matthew 12:8 mean?

The mind has bound itself under rules and made the rules its master, until even rest became another law to obey and another ground for judging who has kept it and who has failed. But the Son is not the servant of the form; the awakened Self is lord over every structure, because meaning was placed in the mind, not in the day.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The mind has bound itself under rules and made the rules its master, until even rest became another law to obey and another ground for judging who has kept it and who has failed. But the Son is not the servant of the form; the awakened Self is lord over every structure, because meaning was placed in the mind, not in the day.

To be lord of the sabbath is to remember that peace is not granted by an observance but chosen by a mind that has changed its teacher. A mind that knows what it is does not wait for permission to be at rest, for rest was its condition before any rule was made.

Son of man: the awakened Self that is lord over every form, the true identity in which meaning and peace already rest.

Live Matthew 12:8 today

  1. Take ten minutes today with no screen and no plan for it, and let it be enough on its own. You are not earning the rest, you are just stopping, and nothing has to come out of it.
  2. When someone tells you how you should be resting, or praying, or taking care of yourself, thank them and then do the version that actually gives you peace. The form is theirs, the quiet is yours to choose.
  3. In a hard stretch of the day, a packed meeting block or traffic that will not move, let your shoulders drop and remind yourself that calm is not waiting on the clock. You can set it down now, right in the middle of it.

Where am I waiting for permission to be at peace?

Tao Te Ching 48

The practice is not in piling up more rules but in letting them fall away, until you act freely and nothing is left undone. Mastery comes when the doing stops straining against itself.

Zen · Linji

If you make a sacred thing out of the method, you have traded a free mind for a new cage. The teaching points at your own nature, and your own nature was never bound by the pointing.

Stoicism · Epictetus

Nothing outside you can hand you peace or take it away, because peace lives in how your mind holds things. The calendar does not rule you, your judgment does.
