Matthew 13:10 · World English Bible
The disciples came, and said to him, “Why do you speak to them in parables?”
The disciples are the parts of a person that have begun to meditate, the faculties turned inward far enough to ask why the teaching comes veiled. Parables are the answer built into the question, secrets deliberately hidden from anyone who will not discipline the mind to look beneath the surface story.

ESOTERIC
The disciples are the parts of a person that have begun to meditate, the faculties turned inward far enough to ask why the teaching comes veiled. Parables are the answer built into the question, secrets deliberately hidden from anyone who will not discipline the mind to look beneath the surface story. The higher awareness speaks in coded images because the meaning is meant to open only to the trained inner faculties, not to the outer man who takes every word as history.
The veiled speech is not concealment for its own sake but a filter, the inner meaning stays closed to the undisciplined mind and opens only to the part of a person willing to sit still and dig beneath the images.
disciples: the inward-turned faculties of a person who meditates, awake enough to question parables: the inner secrets hidden on purpose from anyone unwilling to discipline the mind

The koan is not a riddle with a hidden answer to be looked up. It is given precisely because it cannot be solved by the thinking mind, and the sitting with it is the whole point.
The fish trap is forgotten once the fish is caught, and words can be let go once the meaning arrives. The person still arguing about the trap never ate.
Scripture is turned over and turned over, because it is read on more than one level and the plain sense is only the first door. The work of returning to it is where the meaning opens.
