Matthew 13:14 Meaning In Them the Prophecy of Isaiah Is

In them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says, ‘By hearing you will hear, and will in no way understand; Seeing you will see, and will in no way perceive:

What does Matthew 13:14 mean?

The outer ear takes in the sound and the outer eye takes in the shape, yet the meaning never arrives, because hearing and seeing on the surface are not the inner understanding and perceiving that open the deeper mind. A person can register every word and every image and still stand outside the sense of them, the door of comprehension closed while the senses stay busy.

Esoteric

The outer ear takes in the sound and the outer eye takes in the shape, yet the meaning never arrives, because hearing and seeing on the surface are not the inner understanding and perceiving that open the deeper mind. A person can register every word and every image and still stand outside the sense of them, the door of comprehension closed while the senses stay busy. The prophecy describes the ordinary sleep of consciousness, awake at the level of the body and dark at the level of the spirit. Sense-life runs on without ever waking the faculty that grasps what it all means.

Live Matthew 13:14 today

  1. Take one thing you already know you should do and do it today, even a small version. Knowing it again is not the step that is missing.
  2. Instead of sending someone another article or clip, say in your own words what it actually meant to you. The part that changed you is the part worth passing on.
  3. When the day fills up with input, messages, headlines, videos, close one of them early and sit with what you already have. More is almost never what was needed.

What do I know perfectly well and still live as if I had never heard?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 47

You can travel everywhere and learn nothing, because understanding does not come from the amount passing before your eyes. Stillness sees further than motion.

Buddhism

A person can carry the teachings perfectly in memory and live as though they had never heard them, like someone counting another man's cattle. Information is not the same as waking up.

Sufism

The donkey carries the library and is none the wiser for it. What is loaded on you is not the same as what has entered you.
