Hear, then, the parable of the farmer.

What does Matthew 13:18 mean?

The sower is a person in the act of imagining, and the seed he scatters is the word, every assumption dropped into the mind. The ground is the receptive depth beneath awareness, the part that grows whatever it is given without argument.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The sower is a person in the act of imagining, and the seed he scatters is the word, every assumption dropped into the mind. The ground is the receptive depth beneath awareness, the part that grows whatever it is given without argument. Nothing is planted there but returns in kind, so the harvest a person reaps is the exact sum of what he has sown in feeling.

The four soils are the four ways a state is received. Some assumptions never sink in because doubt snatches them at once. Some spring up fast but have no depth of preparation and wither when tested. Some are choked by worldly worry and the pull of riches. And some fall into ground that holds the word until it bears. The whole outer world is that field showing back what was placed in it. A person harvests the states he has quietly entertained.

Live Matthew 13:18 today

  1. Pick one worry you have rehearsed more than ten times this week and admit, plainly, that you have been practicing it. Then run the same scene once with the ending you actually want, slowly, until it feels normal.
  2. Listen to one person today without deciding in advance how the talk will go. Your assumption about them is already shaping their half of it, so lend them a better one.
  3. In the traffic or the grocery line, when the irritation rises, let it come and do not feed it with story. Hold the quiet picture of arriving home already settled, and let the line move at its own speed.

Of everything I rehearsed today, how much of it do I actually want to live?

The same truth in other traditions

Dhammapada

Everything we are rises out of what we have thought. Our life is made of our thoughts the way a cart is made of its wheels.

Upanishads

A person is made of his longing. As his deep wanting is, so is his will, and as his will is, so are the deeds and the life that come out of him.

Zen

Do not fight the weeds in the mind. Look at what you keep watering, because that is what is growing.
