Matthew 13:28 Meaning He Said to Them

He said to them, ‘An enemy has done this.’ “The servants asked him, ‘Do you want us to go and gather them up?’

What does Matthew 13:28 mean?

The wish to go out and tear the false thoughts up at once is the ego's own strategy wearing the mask of zeal. It would fight fear with attack, root out guilt by force, and in the struggle it only makes the error real by treating it as something solid enough to pull.

Christian Psychology

The wish to go out and tear the false thoughts up at once is the ego's own strategy wearing the mask of zeal. It would fight fear with attack, root out guilt by force, and in the struggle it only makes the error real by treating it as something solid enough to pull. A mind eager to destroy what troubles it has already forgotten that the trouble is a figure in a dream.

The master's calm is the answer of love, which never rushes to attack. He knows the false was planted by no real power and needs no violence to undo it. What was made in a moment of sleep is corrected by waking, not by war, and the servants' haste is quietly set aside.

Servants: the eager, willing thoughts of the mind that want to act, ready to attack error head-on before they understand it. Enemy: the belief in separation, named as the source of the false yet possessing no reality of its own. Master: the loving teacher within, who neither fears the error nor fights it.

Live Matthew 13:28 today

  1. When a worry starts circling while you are lying there with your phone, try not wrestling it. Let it sit in the room with you, unanswered, and see whether it stays as big as it looked.
  2. If someone says something in a group chat that pulls at you, leave the reply unsent for an hour. Most of what felt urgent will have no weight left by then.
  3. In a meeting where you feel the need to correct the thing fast, let the first silence pass without you in it. Speaking from the calm underneath is different from speaking from the pull.

What would stay quiet in me today if I stopped treating it as something I have to pull out?

Tao Te Ching 29

The world is not fixed by force. Grabbing at it and hammering it into shape only spoils what was already finding its own balance.

Zen · Bankei

Trying to stop a thought with another thought never ends. The deluded thought has no root of its own, so leave it unopposed and it has nowhere to stand.

Stoicism · Epictetus

The disturbance is not in the thing but in your judgment of it. Argue with the judgment and you have already agreed it was solid.
