CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Here the ground is not shallow but crowded. The truth is received, yet it is planted among rival growths that were already there and quietly given the run of the mind. The thorns are the worries and cravings the mind has kept and fed, the anxious concern for safety and gain that it never questioned. They do not attack the word directly; they simply grow faster and take the light and the room, until what is holy is crowded out and starved without a single blow being struck.

A mind can hold love and fear together for a while and imagine both may flourish. But attention is one thing, and whatever the mind keeps feeding will crowd out whatever it neglects. The word is not defeated here; it is smothered, choked by everything the mind refused to release when it made its little room for truth.

Thorns: the anxious worries and cravings the mind keeps and feeds, which crowd out the truth by taking the room and attention it needs to grow.

Live Matthew 13:7 today

  1. Before bed, look at the last three things you worried about today and ask which ones you have been feeding on purpose, checking, rereading, rehearsing. Choose one to stop feeding tomorrow.
  2. When you sit down to eat with someone, leave your phone in another room. The worry will still be there afterward, and the person in front of you only gets this hour.
  3. At work, when the urgent thing and the important thing both want you, say out loud which one you are choosing. Crowding happens quietly, and saying it breaks the quiet.

What have I been watering that I never actually wanted to grow?

A cup already full cannot be filled. What you keep decides what you can receive.

Tao Te Ching 44

The one who grasps at more is never at rest. Wanting and worrying take up the whole house, and nothing quiet can live there.

Buddhism · the Four Noble Truths

Craving is not a side problem. It is the thing that crowds the mind and keeps peace from settling, and the way out is letting go rather than adding something new.
