Matthew 14:22 Meaning Immediately Jesus Made the Disciples Get Into

Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat, and to go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

What does Matthew 14:22 mean?

Walking upon the water is meditation itself, awareness holding steady above the restless deep, and the sending of the faculties ahead by ship is the mind put out onto the waters of consciousness to cross to the other side. The ship is the mind, and the disciples urged into it are the meditating faculties directed toward the far shore of a stilled state.

The multitudes are dispersed because the crowd of scattered thoughts must be released before the crossing can be made.

The higher awareness stays back to send the throng away, clearing the surface of its noise, and only then does it come walking over the water. The passage to the other side is the movement of the inner self across the deep toward stillness, once the swarm of ordinary thinking has been let go.

Live Matthew 14:22 today

  1. Before anything hard today, give yourself one unfilled minute: no phone, no podcast, no music. Let the crowd of thoughts thin out a little before you start.
  2. When your mind is loud in the middle of a conversation, stop composing your reply and just listen to the other person for ten seconds. Send the crowd away and the real thing they are saying comes through.
  3. In traffic or on a crowded train, let the noise outside you be noise and quit adding to it inside. You are between where you were and where you are going, and that is allowed to be a quiet place.

What would I have to let go of to cross into a quieter hour?

The same truth in other traditions

Buddhism · Dhammapada

The mind runs everywhere like a restless crowd. Quiet is not found by chasing it but by letting the running stop.

Tao Te Ching 15

Muddy water clears by being left alone. No stirring makes it faster.

Hinduism · Patanjali's Yoga Sutras 1.2

Stillness begins when the churning of the mind settles. That settling is the practice. Everything else follows it.
