Matthew 14:31 Meaning Immediately Jesus Stretched Out His Hand

Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?”

What does Matthew 14:31 mean?

Love reaches out the instant it is called, and the rescue is immediate because it was never far; only the mind's attention had wandered. The hand that catches the sinking mind was there the whole time, waiting for the turn back from fear, and the moment the mind reaches, it is held.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

Love reaches out the instant it is called, and the rescue is immediate because it was never far; only the mind's attention had wandered. The hand that catches the sinking mind was there the whole time, waiting for the turn back from fear, and the moment the mind reaches, it is held.

The question that follows is not a rebuke but a teaching. Doubt was the whole of the trouble: the mind believed the storm more than it believed love, and in that instant of trust withdrawn it began to fall. To be asked why it doubted is to be shown that nothing in the sea ever had the power its fear had granted it, and that faith was all the walking ever required.

The outstretched hand: love's help, always present and reaching the instant the mind turns back to it. The sea: the fear the mind had trusted more than love, powerless except by that misplaced belief.

Self-Help

The same water holds a man or swallows him according to what he believes while he stands on it.

Belief runs the body directly, with no delay for deliberation, which is why a man can walk and then drop inside a single stride. Attention slid off Jesus and onto the weather, the state went with it, and the legs obeyed the state.

The question put to him is an investigation. Doubt has a cause, the cause can be found, and he is sent after it while the hand is still gripping his arm, which is the only safe way to study a failure. A man who reads one sinking as a verdict on what he is will build a fence out of a single bad second and never step off a boat again.

Live Matthew 14:31 today

  1. The next time you catch yourself in the familiar loop of worry today, do not scold yourself for it. Just turn, and take the next small step, and let the speed of that relief surprise you.
  2. When you reach out to someone today after a stretch of distance, a text, a call, do not spend the opening apologizing for the gap. Just start talking.
  3. Under pressure today, drop the question of whether you are strong enough for this. Ask instead what is actually in front of you to do, and do that one thing.

What have I been afraid to reach for, assuming it would take a long time to arrive?

The moment you turn toward it, you find it was already turned toward you. The reaching and the being reached are one motion.

The Self is nearer than your own breath, closer than the thing you were searching for it with. It was never at a distance to be crossed.
