Matthew 15:17 Meaning Don’t You Understand That Whatever Goes Into

Don’t you understand that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the belly, and then out of the body?

What does Matthew 15:17 mean?

What passes through the mouth and the belly touches only the physical machinery and never reaches the inner person. The mouth and belly are the body's lower processing, the passage where matter is taken, used, and discharged, working entirely on the outward plane.

What passes through the mouth and the belly touches only the physical machinery and never reaches the inner person. The mouth and belly are the body's lower processing, the passage where matter is taken, used, and discharged, working entirely on the outward plane. Food and the rules about it belong to the flesh and its digestion, and none of that traffic enters the seat of the true self.

What defiles or purifies a person rises from the heart within, not from what the body swallows. The mistake is to look for holiness in the handling of outer things when the real ground of a person lies deeper than any mouthful can reach.

Mouth: the entrance of the body's lower processing, where outer matter is taken in on the physical plane only Belly: the digesting machinery of the flesh, handling what enters without ever touching the inner self The draught: the place of discharge, where the used matter of the body is cast out, showing how little of it reaches the spirit

Live Matthew 15:17 today

  1. Sometime today you will do a clean, careful outer thing: the right breakfast, the tidy desk, the finished list. While you do it, ask quietly what state your heart is actually in, and let that be the real report on your day.
  2. When someone near you eats differently, spends differently, or keeps rules you do not keep, let it pass without a verdict. Their plate is not their inner life, and you have never once seen their heart.
  3. If you catch yourself fixing a hard day by reaching for food, a drink, or the phone, pause for one breath before the reach. The thing going in will go right through you; the ache underneath it is the part worth sitting with.

If the way you handled outward things today were set aside, what would be left of you?

Tao Te Ching 12

The five flavors dull the palate and the chase after outer things unsettles the heart. What you take in through the senses passes through; the person you are is settled somewhere the senses never reach.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

All that we are is made by the mind. The hand that eats and the body that digests do not decide a life; the thought behind them does.

Stoicism · Epictetus

The body and what happens to it belong to the outer order of things and run their own course. What is actually yours is the judgment inside you, and nothing swallowed can touch it.
