Matthew 15:22 Meaning Behold

Behold, a Canaanite woman came out from those borders, and cried, saying, “Have mercy on me, Lord, you son of David! My daughter is severely possessed by a demon!”

What does Matthew 15:22 mean?

The lower, outcast side of the soul cries toward the inner king on behalf of what it has produced, and that cry is the emotional nature reaching for its own healing. The woman of Canaan comes from the borderlands, the region of the self held to be common and unclean, the feeling nature living outside the sanctioned centers.

Her daughter is what that nature has brought forth, and the daughter is tormented, meaning the offspring of untended emotion is a state of the mind seized and shaken from within.

A devil vexing the daughter is a fixed, disordered force lodged in the psyche, an energy that grips and convulses the inner life until it is confronted. The mother appeals to the son of David, the ruling awakened consciousness, because only the higher self can command what has taken hold below it. The feeling side crying out for its afflicted offspring is the whole movement of healing beginning at the edge of a person and reaching in.

Woman of Canaan: the feeling nature of the borderlands, the emotional side of the self held common and unclean, living outside the honored centers Daughter: what the untended emotional nature brings forth within, an inner state now seized and shaken Devil: a fixed, disordered energy lodged in the psyche that grips and convulses the inner life Son of David: the ruling awakened consciousness within, the only power that can command what has taken hold below it

Live Matthew 15:22 today

  1. There is some feeling in you that you keep outside the official story of your life: the resentment, the loneliness, the fear about money. Give it two minutes with no phone, let it speak plainly, and bring it to the steadiest part of yourself instead of shutting the door.
  2. If someone talks to you today from a raw place, in a text, at the kitchen table, in a voice that cracks, do not manage them and do not fix them in one line. Stay in the conversation until they feel heard, because the asking is already half the healing.
  3. When something in you grips and shakes and will not let go, the anger in traffic, the panic before a meeting, name it out loud to yourself in one honest sentence. Naming it puts the calm part of you back in charge of the room.

What part of yourself have you been keeping outside the door, and what would it say if you let it in?

In the Masnavi a man is told that his very cry of "Allah" was already the answer he was waiting for. The calling and the being heard are one thing, not two.

She is called the one who hears the cries of the world, and no cry is too low or too far out to be heard. The appeal from the edge reaches the center without needing credentials.
