EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Who am I? This is the question that turns you around, away from every opinion the world offers and back toward the one who is looking. Others answer with names and roles and stories, and each answer is only a thought, a label laid over the mystery of your own being.

The true answer is not a concept the mind can hold. It is the silent sense of I Am that is present before any thought about yourself arises, the awareness in which all your experience appears. When you stop reaching for a description and simply feel that you are, you have found what the question was pointing to. That felt presence is who you are.

MANIFESTATION

Manifestation

The question turns on the two words I am, your own awareness of being, and it asks what you are joining to them. Whatever you attach to I am, you become. The one who says he is poor, unloved, unwell finds that identity hardening into his circumstances; the one who says he is the person he longs to be finds that assumption setting to work as surely.

The answer cannot be reasoned out from the outside, only recognized within. To know who the I is, is to feel your own consciousness as the creative power, the God of your world, not a figure somewhere else. The self you accept as yours is the cause of everything that meets you. A person defines himself, silently and by feeling, and that self-definition writes his experience. What you conclude after I am decides the life you live from.

Live Matthew 16:15 today

  1. Sometime today, put the phone face down and sit still for one minute without filling the silence. Instead of thinking about yourself, just feel that you are here.
  2. Next time someone describes you, kindly or not, let the description land without rushing to agree or defend. You can hear it and still know you are more than the word they used.
  3. When a meeting or a group chat has you scrambling to prove you belong, pause for one breath and feel your own presence in the room. Speak from there instead of from the scramble.

If no one told me who I was, what would still be left?

The same truth in other traditions

Upanishads

The sages were asked what a person truly is, and the answer was not a name or a body or a mind. It was that same awareness doing the asking, pure and already present.

Zen

A student is told to look for the face he had before his parents were born. The point is not to find an image but to run out of images and rest in what is left.
