What does Matthew 17:18 mean?

Christian Psychology

What is cast out here is not a creature but a belief, the conviction that something foreign has taken hold and must be endured. A mind healed does not fight the fear it harbors; it withdraws the welcome it had unknowingly given. The rebuke is the simple refusal to believe the lie any longer, and the departure follows because the lie had no power except the mind's own agreement.

So the cure is instant because nothing real was ever removed. The child is well the moment the mind stops hosting the fear it mistook for a force. This is how correction works, not by combat with a strong enemy but by seeing that the enemy was only a thought the mind had chosen, and can as easily release.

Devil: the belief in a hostile power within, the fear the mind hosts until it withdraws its consent. Child: the part of the mind held captive by that belief, restored to wholeness the instant the fear is released.

Live Matthew 17:18 today

  1. Catch the sentence you keep repeating about yourself today, the one that starts with I always or I never. Say out loud: I do not believe that anymore, and let the matter drop.
  2. If someone hands you a story about who they are, hopeless, too far gone, bad at this, do not nod along. Talk to the person, not the story.
  3. Under pressure, when the panic voice announces this is a disaster, ask it for evidence. Most of the time it has none, and the whole thing deflates.

What have I been feeding by agreeing with it?

A thought has no power of its own. It borrows all its weight from your agreement, and loses it the moment you stop nodding.
