Matthew 17:5 Meaning While He Was Still Speaking

While he was still speaking, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them. Behold, a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.”

What does Matthew 17:5 mean?

A mind grown quiet enough will hear the one Voice it has always drowned out with its own noise. The words spoken are the truth about every mind, not a favor granted to one alone, for the belovedness announced belongs to what love created and cannot be withdrawn.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A mind grown quiet enough will hear the one Voice it has always drowned out with its own noise. The words spoken are the truth about every mind, not a favor granted to one alone, for the belovedness announced belongs to what love created and cannot be withdrawn. The instruction to listen is the whole of the way home, since the ego speaks first and loudest and the correction speaks only to those who pause.

What overshadows the mind here is not gloom but a nearness so bright it feels like being covered. In that stillness the true parentage of the self is remembered, and the fearful account of who one is falls silent for a moment. To hear is simply to choose the teacher who tells no lie.

Cloud: the brightness of a Presence so near it seems to cover the mind, the felt closeness of love that fear had hidden. Voice: the one honest Teacher within, the correction the mind can hear once its own clamor stills. Son: what love created, held blameless and cherished, the true identity the ego denies.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

A radiance overshadows them, and out of it comes a voice. This is the formless breaking through form, the light of pure presence that shines whenever the mind grows quiet enough to let it through. What speaks is not a person but Being itself, recognizing its own reflection in an awakened human life and finding it good.

Hear ye him. The deepest hearing is not the catching of words but a listening that comes from stillness, in which you sense the presence beneath what is spoken. When you become that quiet and attentive, you stop living from the noise in your head and begin to receive life directly. That is what it means to truly listen.

SUFISM

Sufism

Even in awe the mouth keeps running, eager to add its own words to the moment. That restless talking is a small vanity, the wish to have a part in what is holy. The needed thing arrives as the last command from the cloud: listen. Stillness, not commentary, is what this scene asks.

The cloud that hides is also the cloud that speaks. God draws a veil and then, from behind it, makes Himself known, the way a buried treasure finally lets itself be found.

Live Matthew 17:5 today

  1. Before the first scroll of the day, sit with your phone face down for two minutes. Not to achieve anything, just to let the inner commentary run out of steam.
  2. In your next real conversation, let the other person finish fully, including the pause after, before you say a word. See what you hear that you would have talked over.
  3. When a message lands that makes your chest tighten, wait before replying. The first voice in you is fast and loud. Give the quieter one a chance to speak.

What have I been too noisy to hear?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching

The one who talks constantly cannot hear. Empty the mouth and the ears open on their own.

Judaism · Hasidic teaching

God's voice has not stopped speaking. We have simply filled the room with so much sound that we cannot catch it.

Buddhism

The surface of the mind is loud with its own commentary. Sit until the commentary thins, and what remains was always the truer thing.
