Matthew 19:19 Meaning Honor Your Father and Your Mother

‘Honor your father and your mother.’ And, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’

What does Matthew 19:19 mean?

Love of neighbor as oneself presumes a man has first learned to bear himself, which is the harder task. Someone who holds himself in contempt has nothing to offer anyone, and what he pours out as care curdles quickly into resentment.

Clinical Psychology

Love of neighbor as oneself presumes a man has first learned to bear himself, which is the harder task. Someone who holds himself in contempt has nothing to offer anyone, and what he pours out as care curdles quickly into resentment. He gives what he has, and he has bitterness.

So the command reaches deeper than kindness. Order your own house, honor the people who carried you here, become someone whose regard is worth receiving. Only then does concern for another hold any weight. Charity from an empty man is a loan he silently expects repaid. Tend your own soul first, and you gain something worth handing to someone else.

Live Matthew 19:19 today

  1. Look at how you talk to yourself after a mistake today, the phrasing in your head when you miss a reply or forget something. If you would not say it out loud to a friend who did the same thing, you are not holding yourself to a high standard, you are just being cruel.
  2. Call or message one of the people who got you here, a parent, a grandparent, whoever actually carried you. Not a holiday text. Ask them something real and let the answer take a while.
  3. When you are about to help someone while running on empty, be honest about whether you are giving or lending. If you can feel the invoice forming already, either rest first or say plainly what you can actually do.

Is what I am offering people coming out of something full, or something resentful?

The same truth in other traditions

Confucius · the Great Learning

The one who wants to order the world first orders his state, then his household, and before any of it his own conduct. Order moves outward from where you actually stand, never inward from a speech.

Stoicism · Epictetus

You cannot hand anyone a peace you do not have. Work on what is yours to govern, your own judgments and habits, and what you give others stops being a performance.

Judaism · Hillel

If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And if I am only for myself, what am I? Both halves are required, and the order matters.
