Matthew 19:8 Meaning He Said to Them

He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it has not been so.

What does Matthew 19:8 mean?

A hardened heart is a mind that has chosen fear and then asks for laws to match its choosing. The permission to put away was never truth; it was a concession to minds too frightened to hold the bond, a rule shaped to the hardness rather than the reality.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

A hardened heart is a mind that has chosen fear and then asks for laws to match its choosing. The permission to put away was never truth; it was a concession to minds too frightened to hold the bond, a rule shaped to the hardness rather than the reality. What the ego calls its right to reject is only the measure of how closed it has become.

From the beginning it was not so means the separation has no origin in what is real. Soften the heart and the whole case for casting out dissolves, for there was nothing to divide and no cause to send anyone away.

Moses: the teacher who meets the mind where its fear has hardened, granting a rule fitted to weakness rather than to truth. Wife: the joined brother the frightened mind seeks leave to reject, one with the self from the beginning.

Live Matthew 19:8 today

  1. When you catch yourself building the case against someone in your head, listing everything they did, see if you can set the list down for a minute and just sit with how tired you are. The case is usually a way of not feeling that.
  2. With one person today, hold off on the reply you already have loaded. Let them finish, then ask a real question instead, even something small like what made that hard for you.
  3. In a tense meeting or a group chat going sideways, when the urge comes to cut someone out, mute them, write them off, wait one breath and stay in the room. You can set a limit later without closing your heart now.

Where in my life have I made a rule to protect something that is actually just fear?

Tao Te Ching 76

What is alive stays soft and flexible; what is rigid and brittle is already closer to death. Hardness looks like strength but it is the first sign of breaking.

Buddhism · Dhammapada

Hatred is never ended by hatred, only by its absence. The wish to push someone out of your life is a wound you keep reopening in yourself.

Sufism · Rumi

The wound is where the light gets in, and the heart that stays open suffers more honestly than the heart that closes to stay safe. Rules we make to protect a closed heart only keep it closed.
