Matthew 20:18 · World English Bible

Matthew 20:18 Meaning Behold

Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death,

What does Matthew 20:18 mean?

Going up to Jerusalem is the rising of consciousness toward the center of peace within, the ascent of the inner life toward the seat of wholeness in the head. The Son of man is the human awareness born in flesh, and its betrayal is the moment that awakening self is handed over to the very faculties that should serve it, delivered into the grip of the lower nature at the height of its climb.

The chief priests and scribes are the entrenched religious and reasoning powers within, the outward, literal mind that condemns the living awareness it cannot understand. They sentence the higher self to death because ascent always meets the resistance of the fixed lower order it threatens.

Jerusalem: the center of inner peace, the seat of wholeness in the head toward which consciousness rises Son of man: the human awareness born into flesh, moving up toward its own elevation Chief priests: the entrenched sacred authority within, the fixed order that resists the rising self Scribes: the outward, literal reasoning mind that condemns the awareness it cannot grasp

  1. When you commit to something good and your own mind immediately starts listing reasons it is silly, hear the voice and keep going anyway. That voice is not the truth, it is the old order defending itself.
  2. When you share a change you are making and someone close to you laughs or picks it apart, stay warm and do not argue. They are protecting the version of you they already know.
  3. Under pressure, when the quick cynical read is right there and would get a laugh in the group chat, leave it unsent. The clever reasoning is often what kills the thing worth keeping.

Which voice in your head talks you out of the best thing you are trying?
