Matthew 20:23 Meaning He Said to Them

He said to them, “You will indeed drink my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with, but to sit on my right hand and on my left hand is not mine to give; but it is for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”

What does Matthew 20:23 mean?

Yes, you will drink the cup. The suffering that transforms comes to everyone who walks this way, and it will do its work in you.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

Yes, you will drink the cup. The suffering that transforms comes to everyone who walks this way, and it will do its work in you. But the place of honor you imagine is not something one person hands to another, and it is not won by wanting it more strongly than the next.

Such a place is prepared by the source of life itself, and given to those who have been made ready, which means emptied of the very self that grasps for position. As long as you are still reaching for it, you are not yet the one for whom it is prepared. Only when that grasping self dissolves does the honor arrive, given freely because no ego remains to claim it.

Live Matthew 20:23 today

  1. Do one piece of good work today that nobody will see or credit, and let that be the whole of it.
  2. When someone else gets the recognition, say something genuinely glad to them before you sort out how you feel about it.
  3. In the room where decisions are made, speak up for the idea rather than for your claim on it, and let it be taken up without your name attached.

What would you still do if you knew for certain no one would ever know it was you?

The same truth in other traditions

Tao Te Ching 2

The sage acts without laying claim, and the work stands. Grasping for credit is what makes the achievement small.

Bhagavad Gita 2

Act because the act is right, not for what it earns you. Let go of the fruit and the work becomes clean.

Stoicism · Epictetus

You play the part you are given, well or badly, and the casting is not yours. Wanting a bigger role is the one thing guaranteed to ruin the one you have.
