Matthew 20:28 Meaning Even as the Son of Man Came

even as the Son of Man came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

What does Matthew 20:28 mean?

The mind believes its life is a possession to be guarded, hoarded against a world that would take it, and so it grasps and defends and asks continually to be served. In that grasping it forgets that what it clings to was never separate from the whole, and that a life spent defending itself is a life already lost to fear.

The mind believes its life is a possession to be guarded, hoarded against a world that would take it, and so it grasps and defends and asks continually to be served. In that grasping it forgets that what it clings to was never separate from the whole, and that a life spent defending itself is a life already lost to fear.

The awakened self shows another way, giving itself freely because it knows it cannot be diminished by love. Its life laid down is not a payment made to an angry power but the ransom that frees many, for when one mind remembers it is not a separate body to be protected, it releases every mind that watched it. To give the self away is to discover the self was never in danger, and that release, not defense, is what saves.

Son of man: the mind that has awakened within the human dream, the teacher who serves rather than demands to be served. Ransom: the self freely given up, the release of the separate life that frees every mind still holding fast to its own.

The higher consciousness rising in the body does not descend to be served by the lower faculties but to serve them, pouring its own life down into the many parts that make a person. The number of the served is the crowd, the whole assembly of organs and states scattered through the flesh that need redeeming. This awakening self spends itself as the price that buys those scattered parts back from their bondage to the senses.

A ransom is the giving up of one thing to free another. Here the light in the head gives its own vitality so the many centers below can be loosed from mere appetite. The awakening in a person works by pouring itself out through the whole body, not by being waited upon.

Live Matthew 20:28 today

  1. Give away an hour today that you were saving for yourself, and give it without keeping score of what it cost you.
  2. In a disagreement, stop defending your version of events. Ask what the other person needed and actually wait for the answer.
  3. When a message lands that feels like an attack on your reputation, resist the long reply that clears your name. Answer the practical part only, or nothing at all.

What am I guarding so carefully that I have stopped being able to give it away?

Heaven and earth last because they do not live for themselves. The sage puts the self last and finds it preserved.

The suffering comes from defending a self that was never a solid, separate thing. Loosening that grip is not a loss, it is relief.
