Matthew 21:31 Meaning Which of the Two Did the Will

Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said to him, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Most certainly I tell you that the tax collectors and the prostitutes are entering into God’s Kingdom before you.

What does Matthew 21:31 mean?

The one who first refused and then went is the mind that admits its resistance and turns anyway, while the one whose lips agreed and whose feet stayed still is the mind hiding behind correct appearances. Heaven is not entered by the polished self-image that never questions itself, but by the part willing to see where it went wrong.

CHRISTIAN PSYCHOLOGY

Christian Psychology

The one who first refused and then went is the mind that admits its resistance and turns anyway, while the one whose lips agreed and whose feet stayed still is the mind hiding behind correct appearances. Heaven is not entered by the polished self-image that never questions itself, but by the part willing to see where it went wrong.

The despised go in first because they carry no pretense of innocence to defend, and so they have less to unlearn. What blocks the doorway is not the wrong but the certainty of being right, which leaves nothing open to correction.

Two sons: two responses in one mind, the resistant part that later yields and the agreeable part that never moves. Father: the Source whose one desire is that the mind return to love.

EGO & BEING

Ego v. Being

It is not the one who says the right words who does the father's will, but the one who acts. The mind loves to announce its own goodness, to build an image of itself as righteous, and that image becomes a prison. The publicans and harlots go in first because they carry no such image. They know their own darkness and cannot pretend.

Presence comes more easily to those who have fallen than to those secure in being good. The self that says 'I am righteous' is still lost in ego. Awakening comes to whoever actually lives it now, not to whoever only claims the name.

Live Matthew 21:31 today

  1. Think of one thing you said yes to lately and quietly did not do. Instead of explaining it to yourself, just admit it plainly and do the small first piece of it today, even badly.
  2. In a conversation with someone close to you, let yourself say "you were right about that" out loud, with nothing added after it. No defense, no context, no but.
  3. When a message or a meeting makes you feel accused and your mind starts building the case for why you are fine, pause before you reply. Ask yourself if there is one true percent in what they said, and answer that part first.

Where am I protecting how I look instead of letting myself be corrected?

Tao Te Ching

The one who knows they do not know is on solid ground, while the one certain of their own correctness is already lost. Water fills the low places, not the full ones.

Zen

A cup already full can receive nothing. Beginner's mind is not ignorance, it is the openness that lets you be shown where you were wrong.

Stoicism · Epictetus

It is impossible to learn what you think you already have. The man who defends his opinion at every turn keeps his errors safe inside him.
